Assistant Controller

Texas- New Mexico Newspaper Partnership has an opening for an Assistant Controller in their El Paso TX business office. This position reports to the Controller and assists in the management of consolidated day to day business office functions for the partnership, with employee direct reports responsible for bi-weekly payroll, accounts payable, and general ledger month end close. The Assistant Controller will play a hands-on role for the monthly close process, including preparation and review of the journal entries, reserve and variance analysis, validation of journal entries from related system interfaces and analysis of monthly financial statements and statistical reports. This individual should be able to evaluate processes and provide suggestions for improvements to streamline operations and create efficiencies

Qualified candidates must have experience in developing and managing a results–oriented accounting team. The successful candidate would be analytical with strong computer skills, Advanced skill with accounting systems and Excel, along with overall knowledge of Microsoft Office products – Word, PowerPoint and ability to use 10-key calculator. Additionally, this individual should be skilled with Investigation and problem solving skills to track back to the source of a problem development, coordination and maintenance of spreadsheets and databases; follow through to completion of projects/processes on deadline; and have the ability to respond timely to multiple and varied inquiries. Candidate should have attention to detail and strong documentation and reporting skills and effective written and oral communication.

An undergraduate or graduate degree in accounting and a minimum of five years of experience (finance degrees will be considered depending on related work experience) is required. Understanding of the newspaper industry or the publishing process beneficial but not required

Billing Manager

Texas- New Mexico Newspaper Partnership has an opening for a Billing Manager in their El Paso TX business office. This Position Manages billing/payment application workflows for the entire TXNM partnership including but not limited to account database changes, maintenance of rate and contract files in the billing systems, and assist in administrating contract fulfillment for rebates and short rates. This manager works across departmental lines to address billing/payment issues and procedures and assists with the validation of revenue recorded each month. This individual should be able to evaluate processes and provide suggestions for improvements to streamline operations and create efficiencies. This position reports to the Controller.

To qualify for this position, candidates must have a four year college degree (business administration, accounting, finance, or IT-related degree preferred) and a minimum of three years of commensurate experience. Skills required include proven experience and efficiency with Microsoft Office software to include Excel, Word and PowerPoint; 10-key by touch, typing, the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, and rates, attention to detail and strong written and oral communication skills.

Controller

We have been asked to assist in a search for a Controller for a publishing company located in the Western half of the country. This is a confidential search so we can’t reveal the exact location until you enter the interviewing stage. All replies will be held in the strictest confidence. We are seeking an experienced financial executive to lead their accounting department. In this role, you’ll be a vital member of the company’s leadership team dedicated to the continued expansion of this highly successful newspaper company. Your input and ideas will be welcomed. This is a great place to work – and to call home. Newspaper experience is preferred but not an absolute prerequisite.

The controller provides pro-active advice to senior managers and directs the accounting staff to accomplish specific initiatives. Expectations include maintaining internal accounting controls; ensuring accurate financial statements; providing the leadership team with financial information and analysis to make informed decisions and accurately assess the ongoing impact of strategies; participating with the management team in the operation of the properties; ensuring that we have a competent staff in the finance department; and, protecting the assets of the company. You will also play a key role in the preparation of the annual budget and tracking and reporting on budget performance.

We need someone with the right qualifications, but – of equal importance – we need a proven leader with strong supervisory experience and a track record of motivating, training and developing team members. The successful candidate will have solid accounting skills, prior management experience, analytical and excellent organizational skills and be computer proficient. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is a must. Experience in auditing with a public accounting firm would be a big plus.

Compensation includes a competitive base salary plus an annual performance bonus. Their benefits package includes comprehensive health benefits and a 401(k) plan.

Senior Internal Auditor

Gannett Co., Inc. internal audit seeks a senior internal auditor to plan, administer and report on results of financial, IT and operational audits at Gannett corporate, its subsidiaries and field operations.

This person will oversee the planning, execution, supervision and conclusion of audits at Gannett locations and will work closely with external auditors at certain locations. They will be responsible for executing assigned sections of the internal audits (typically advertising and circulation) and will identify financial statement errors, internal control weaknesses and develop meaningful recommendations for improvement. The senior auditor will assist less experienced staff members by providing on the job training.

Requirements

Two to four years of auditing or similar experience

Minimum of B.S. degree in accounting or finance.

IT audit experience a plus

Proficiency in MS Word and Excel and Windows based word processing software
