Director of Finance

The Times Publishing Company, publishers of the “Erie Times-News” a 56,000 daily circulation newspaper, seeks a Director of Finance to provide leadership and oversight for all the major corporate financial initiatives. Located in Northwestern Pennsylvania, this 121-year old, fourth generation family owned media Company offers a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual. This position reports directly to the President and Publisher.

Core duties and responsibilities include:

• Oversight of all financial operations.

• Coordination, analyzation, and reporting of financial performance to management and board of directors.

• Prepare short and long term financial forecasts of financial performance for President and Publisher, top level management and Board of Directors.

• Partner with Sales and Marketing Director in the development of sales compensation strategies.

• Oversight of the annual budgeting process.

• Oversee audit and tax functions, coordinate activities with outside audit firms, and review firms’ performance.

• Develop, implement and maintain accounting and administrative policies and procedures for a wide-ranging set of activities including financial accounting and reporting, other corporate policies and vendor negotiations.

• Partnering with the President and Publisher in preparing for monthly Board of Director reports, quarterly Board of Director meetings and annual shareholder meetings.

Qualified candidates will possess a BS in Finance, Accounting or related field, CPA or MBA is preferred but not required. A proven history of managing and leading people effectively; a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software, strong organization skills with the ability to operate in a variety of media businesses while working in a collaborative, team environment.

The controller will conduct local month-end close; record adjusting journal entries; manage internal controls; prepare variance reports; coordinate the annual budget process; prepare weekly and monthly forecasts; prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and month-end statistical reports; maintain all aspects of the general ledger including preparation of all reconciliations and verification of journal entries for accuracy; and direct the day-to-day business office functions and personnel. The Farmington Daily-Times, a division of MediaNews Group, is seeking a qualified Controller to manage the financial and accounting operations that serve the daily newspaper and various other non-daily products. The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college in accounting/finance with a strong knowledge of GAAP, a proven record of strong leadership skills, strong work ethic, advanced computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills and a minimum five years accounting management experience. Masters degree and/or CPA certification a plus. Newspaper experience is preferred but not required. This position reports to the President of TNP and Publisher of El Paso Times.

Responsibilities:

• Manages financial and business operations for multi-sites in the TNP partnership.

• Assists in identifying areas to increase profitability and improve newspaper efficiencies. Works closely with other departments within the organization.

• Oversees the annual budget process as well as weekly flashes, monthly and quarterly forecasts.

• Prepares and analyzes monthly financial statements and month-end statistical reports.

• Develops comprehensive reports for all departments to assist them in improving their operations.

• Responsible for the training and development of finance department staff.

• Tests compliance and remediate control weaknesses as defined by Sarbanes-Oxley and other internal controls guidelines.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have experience in developing and managing a results–oriented newspaper business office team. The successful candidate will have a proven record of strong leadership skills, excellent strategic planning, communications, analytical and managerial skills, and is a team player. The successful candidate will have an undergraduate or graduate degree in finance, accounting and at least five years’ experience. CPA, MBA preferred along with Media experience.
